Son novios, novia y novio. Son una pareja. Ellos viven en Puerto Rico. Son Natalia y Enrique y al principio del cuento.

They are boyfriend and girlfriend—a couple. They live in Puerto Rico. Their names are Natalia and Enrique,

Se dice que Natalia está embarazada y dice muy embarazada. Ella tiene una barriga.

Natalia is pregnant—very pregnant. She has a big belly.

Hasta aquí. Hay un conflicto?

Hay un problema y es que hay un huracán de camino.

Hay un huracán que viene. Se está acercando a la isla de Puerto Rico, donde ellos viven vive con Enrique y hay un momento en el que Natalia le dice a Enrique.

A hurricane is coming. It is approaching the island of Puerto Rico, where they live together. There’s a moment when Natalia says to Enrique:

Mira Enrique, yo creo que tú deberías. Tú tienes que viajar a Florida para estar con los otros miembros de tu familia. Dice déjame aquí déjame aquí solo no necesito nada pero Enrique le dice no nada de eso. Yo no voy a hacer eso. Tú y yo estamos juntos. Yo estoy contigo. Lo que pasa

Look, Enrique, I think you should… you have to travel to Florida to be with the other members of your family. Leave me here, I don’t need anything.” But Enrique says, “No, nothing like that. I’m not going to do that. You and I are together. I’m staying with you.”

Entonces el próximo día y en las noticias, el hombre en la televisión dice a todo el mundo, tiene que evacuarse Y Natalia dice ojalá que yo pudiera, pero yo no puedo evacuarme. Nosotros no no podemos evacuarnos porque estoy embarazada y puede llegar en cualquier momento.

Then the next day, on the news, the man on television tells everyone they have to evacuate. And Natalia says, “I wish I could, but I can’t evacuate. We can’t evacuate because I’m pregnant and the baby could come at any moment.”

Entonces en el próximo día cuando la tormenta llega, hay vientos muy fuertes y es una tormenta muy fuerte, un huracán muy fuerte y se fueron las luces.

So, the next day when the storm arrives, there are very strong winds—it’s a very strong storm, a powerful hurricane—and the lights went out

Eso es una manera de decir que durante la tormenta la electricidad se apagó. Se fue, no había electricidad, entonces ellos tenían que utilizar usar velas para ver para la luz y durante la tormenta.

That’s a way of saying that during the storm, the electricity went off. There was no electricity, so they had to use candles for light.

De repente Natalia dijo tenemos que ir al hospital porque tengo los dolores en la barriga. Estoy en el parto

And during the storm, suddenly Natalia said, “We have to go to the hospital because I have pain in my stomach. I’m in labor

Entonces, Enrique y Natalia. Se bajan de su apartamento a su carro y Enrique. Maneja hospital con Natalia para atrás. Natalia está atrás porque ella no puede sentarse.

So Enrique and Natalia go down from their apartment to the car. Enrique drives to the hospital with Natalia in the backseat, because she can’t sit

No lo mete porque está en parto y tiene que acostarse en el trasero el asiento trasero. Entonces! Ellos van directamente al hospital pero hay problemas.

she has to lie down in the back seat since she’s in labor. They go straight to the hospital, but there are problems

Hay inundaciones en la calle, agua en todas las calles, mucha agua muy profunda, pero también había un árbol. Un árbol a través de la calle y Enrique. Tenía que bajarse del carro y tratar de moverlo pero no pudo.

The streets are flooded, with water everywhere, very deep water. And also, there’s a tree across the road. Enrique has to get out of the car to try to move it, but he can’t

Y de repente llegó un policía que se llama Osvaldo al principio Osvaldo estaba un poco enojado.

And suddenly a police officer named Osvaldo arrives. At first, Osvaldo is a little angry,

Por qué Osvaldo sabía que la gente debía a evacuarse?

Tenía que evacuarse y estar en la calle es peligroso (because he knows that people were supposed to evacuate. Being out on the street during a hurricane is dangerous)

Qué estás haciendo?

Es muy peligroso estar afuera aquí durante un huracán Enrique Enrique dice sí, pero mi esposa explica lo que está pasando. (So he asks Enrique: “What are you doing? It’s very dangerous to be outside during a hurricane.” Enrique explains, “Yes, but my wife…” and tells him what’s happening)

Entonces Osvaldo decide que tiene que ayudarlos. Entonces Osvaldo se sube en el carro en el asiento trasero con ella y Enrique maneja De camino Enrique está manejando y de repente.

Then Osvaldo decides he has to help them. He gets into the back seat with her, while Enrique drives. On the way, Enrique is driving and suddenly Natalia screams:

Ella grita natal y grita para el carro. El bebé ya viene. Entonces el para el carro y el reza oh Dios por favor danos a la babata está rezando está nervioso y en un momentico después oyó los llantos.

Natalia screams: “Stop the car! The baby is coming now!” So Enrique stops the car and starts to pray: “Oh God, please give us the baby.” He is nervous, but then a moment later, he hears the cries of a baby in the backseat. He knows everything is okay.

De un bebé en el asiento trasero y sabe que todo está bien y Osvaldo. Dice mira felicitaciones. Ustedes tienen una hija y Enrique dice hija

Osvaldo says, “Look, congratulations. You have a daughter

Iba a ser un hijo pero no fue. Entonces ellos se fueron hasta el hospital y todo todo salió bien. El próximo día en el hospital Osvaldo vino para visitar.Y dice felicitaciones.

Enrique says, “A daughter? I thought it was going to be a son, but it wasn’t.” So they continue on to the hospital, and everything turns out fine.

Qué bella tu bebita? Cómo se llama entonces?

María le dice a Osvaldo lo nombramos o la nombramos. En este caso, la nombramos María. Su nombre es María y es obvio que la razón es que es el mismo nombre que el huracán huracán María bebé, María huracán María llegó y la bebé María llegó en el mismo día los dos.(The next day in the hospital, Osvaldo comes to visit and says, “Congratulations. What a beautiful little baby girl. What’s her name?” And they tell him, “We named her María.” It’s obvious why—because the hurricane was called Hurricane María. At the end, she says: “María, María, look out the window. Our island is destroyed, but we will work together to rebuild our beautiful island.”

English: The story is called The Arrival of María. And the idea is that María’s arrival has two meanings—two ways that María “arrived.” So, are there two people?

Then the next day, on the news, the man on television tells everyone they have to evacuate. And Natalia says, “I wish I could, but I can’t evacuate. We can’t evacuate because I’m pregnant and the baby could come at any moment.”

So, the next day when the storm arrives, there are very strong winds—it’s a very strong storm, a powerful hurricane—and the lights went out. That’s a way of saying that during the storm, the electricity went off. There was no electricity, so they had to use candles for light.

And during the storm, suddenly Natalia said, “We have to go to the hospital because I have pain in my stomach. I’m in labor.” So Enrique and Natalia go down from their apartment to the car. Enrique drives to the hospital with Natalia in the backseat, because she can’t sit—she has to lie down in the back seat since she’s in labor.

They go straight to the hospital, but there are problems. The streets are flooded, with water everywhere, very deep water. And also, there’s a tree across the road. Enrique has to get out of the car to try to move it, but he can’t. And suddenly a police officer named Osvaldo arrives. At first, Osvaldo is a little angry, because he knows that people were supposed to evacuate. Being out on the street during a hurricane is dangerous.

So he asks Enrique: “What are you doing? It’s very dangerous to be outside during a hurricane.” Enrique explains, “Yes, but my wife…” and tells him what’s happening. Then Osvaldo decides he has to help them. He gets into the back seat with her, while Enrique drives.
