Salutary Neglect
Early 18th century British policy relaxing the strict enforcement of trade policies in the American colonies.

How was life like for colonies that were living under the Salutary neglect?
-British king IGNORED colonies
-Happy as long as making money
-King's laws were not enforced
-Could make own laws/decisions
What was the French and Indian War?
War between the French and the British over the Ohio River Valley: Domination of North America and the world
What was the reason behind the French and the Indian war?
-The French wanted to trade with the Native Americans.
-Wanted to control the land.
-Wanted to control their cultural future.
What was the French and the Indian war also called?
The 7 years war.

Why is England in debt?
They spent a lot of money on the war, such as their military.
How does England pay off their debt?
England thinks colonists should help pay for war that benefits them (Ohio River Valley fur trade)
Mercantilism
An economic policy under which nations sought to increase their wealth and power by obtaining large amounts of gold and silver and by selling more goods than they bought

How did England enforce Mercantilism?
-Colonists could ONLY trade with England ("mother country")
-Had to trade using English ships.
-Had to give England all its natural resources/raw materials.
-Had to buy expensive man-made goods from England, and only England.
-Laws were there since 1600s before but they were not enforced until 1763.

-Passed in the year of 1660
-Passed by the British Parliament increasing the dependence of the colonies but were not strictly enforced.

-Mobs calling themselves the "Sons of Liberty".
-Attacked tax collectors homes, tarred and feather British officials.
-Hanged dolls representing British officials.
-Protestors in Connecticut even started to bury one tax collector alive.
Why did Tensions start to increase with the solders and the colonist?
-10,000 British troops remained after the French & Indian War
-Conflicts in the streets

What is the Boston Massacre?
The Boston Massacre was a street fight that occurred on March 5, 1770, between a "patriot" mob, throwing snowballs, stones, and sticks, and a squad of British soldiers.

Samuel Adams.
Who was the first person killed in the Boston Massacre?
Crispus Attucks.
Why is Crispus Attucks significant?
-African American/Escaped slave.
-In many early copies he is shown as a white man.
-Erasing role of African Americans in the Revolution - hiding slavery amidst the revolution.
-Considered First American killed in American Revolution.
