Class Petromyzontida
Class of lampreys; petra = stone + myza = to suck.

Diphycercal Caudal Fin
Caudal fin type found in lampreys, lungfish, and coelacanths.

Placoid Scales
Small, conical (tooth-like) scales.

Ganoid Scales
Thick, diamond-shaped scales found in primitive nonteleost bony fishes like gar.

Cycloid Scales
Thin and flexible scales with smooth edges in overlapping rows, found in teleost fishes.

Ctenoid Scales
Thin and flexible scales with jagged/spiny edges in overlapping rows, found in teleost fishes.

Heterocercal Caudal Fin
Caudal fin type found in sharks and sturgeon.

Homocercal Caudal Fin
Caudal fin type found in perch and most bony fish.

Class Chondrichthyes
Class of skates, rays, and sharks; chondros = cartilage + icthyes = fish.

Ampullae of Lorenzini (the little blackheads)
Electroreception (detection of electrical fields) to help catch prey in dogfish sharks.

Lateral Line
Senses low-frequency vibrations to help catch prey.

External gill slits (Class Chondrichthyes)
release water from the shark's body
Class Actinopterygii
Class of ray-finned fishes; aktin = ray + pteryg = wing.

Operculum
Structure that pumps water across the gills.

Pyloric Ceca
Pouches that increase surface area for digestion of food.

Dorsal fin (Class Chondrichthyes)
steering; maintains dorsal-ventral orientation

Pectoral fin (Class Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii)
steering; braking

claspers (Class Chondrichthyes)
helps hold female while mating; used for reproduction in male sharks.

caudal fin (by the tail) (Class Chondrichthyes and Actinopterygii)
source of thrust while swimming; rudder for steering

cloaca (Class Chondrichthyes)
common chamber to release pee, poop and eggs/sperm
liver (Class Chondrichthyes)
stores oil for buoyancy and energy; produces bile; detoxified digestive compounds

spleen (Class Chondrichthyes)
stores blood; removes worn-out red blood cells from circulation

spiral valve (Class Chondrichthyes)
slows passage of food through the intestines; increases SA for digestion and absorption of nutrients

kidney (Class Chondrichthyes)
filter nitrogenous metabolic waste out of blood

Gills ( Class Actinopterygii)
respiration
pyloric ceca (the little fingers)
increases SA for digestion of food

swim bladder
maintains bouyancy
