Social Cleavage
social division between two people based on ascriptive characteristic, collective identification, institutional expression of this identification
Salient vs. Latent
Salient: meets all previous criteria about social cleavages
Latent: could become politically important (ex. left handed people lobbying)
Reinforcing vs. Cross Cutting Cleavage
Reinforcing: social and economic differences reinforce each other, making political conflict more intense (ex. race reinforces class)
Cross Cutting: differences pull people in different directions (ex. different religious groups have different political views)
Different types of social cleavages
Religious, racial, ethnicity, linguistic, urban-rural, center-periphery
