Inquiry
The quest for truth, information, or knowledge through questioning; a continuous process from “womb to tomb.”
Research
Systematic investigation that answers questions and builds knowledge, typically organized into chapters such as Introduction, Literature Review, and Methodology.
Research Design
The overall plan describing how data will be collected and analyzed, and whether a qualitative or quantitative approach will be used.
Variable
A measurable characteristic or factor that can change within a research study.
Literature Review
A chapter that summarizes existing research, identifies gaps, and explains key theories relevant to the study.
Methodology
The chapter that justifies the research design, describes data-collection methods, and addresses limitations and ethical considerations.
Results (Chapter 4)
Section that presents findings from data analysis in clear, accessible formats and relates them to research questions.
Discussion (Chapter 5)
Interprets results, links findings to literature, and highlights implications, limitations, and areas for further research.
Conclusion (Chapter 6)
Summarizes key findings, offers recommendations, suggests future research directions, and formally closes the study.
Inquiry Skills
Abilities such as questioning, investigating, and reasoning that enable individuals to construct understanding.
Inquiring Attitude (Habit of Mind)
A disposition toward continual questioning and exploration needed to pursue knowledge throughout life.
Conceptual Framework
The structure of concepts that guides questioning and searching for answers during inquiry.
Quest for Truth
The foundational purpose of inquiry—seeking appropriate resolutions rather than one “right” answer.
Application of Inquiry
Use of questioning and investigation across all disciplines and facets of daily life.
Outcomes of Inquiry
Enhanced understanding and ability to apply relevant knowledge, not just accumulate information.
Qualitative Approach
Research strategy focusing on descriptive, non-numerical data to understand meanings and experiences.
Quantitative Approach
Research strategy that relies on numerical data and statistical analysis to test hypotheses.
Ethical Considerations
Guidelines ensuring research respects participants’ rights and addresses potential risks or biases.
Data Collection
The process of gathering information or observations used to answer research questions.
Limitations
Factors that restrict the scope or affect the validity of study findings, acknowledged in research reports.
Future Research Directions
Suggestions offered in the conclusion chapter for additional studies to build on current findings.
