What were Monasteries?
Monasteries were religious communities where Monks lived and worked. They were quiet, peaceful places focused on prayer, learning, and helping others.
What were the strict rules Monks followed?
They prayed many times a day, and often gave up personal belongings.
Why did Monks copy books by hand?
To help keep knowledge alive of a time when very few people could read or write.
What did Monasteries do?
Monasteries helped care for the poor and sick.

What were Abbeys and who ran them?
Abbeys were large and important monasteries, often run by an abbot. An example of this is Fountains Abbey.
