What is the only thing we take to heaven?

Wir dürfen etwas mitnehmen:

We can take something with us:

Unseren Charakter. Wir dürfen unseren Charakter mitnehmen.

Our character. We can take our character with us.

Der Rest muss glücklicherweise hierbleiben.

Fortunately, the rest must stay here.

Aber den Charakter, den dürfen wir mitnehmen.

Die Bibel sagt in der Apostelgeschichte:

The Bible says in the history of apostles:

Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal in das Königreich Gottes eingehen.

We have to go into the kingdom of God through a lot of tribulation.

Viele wollen damit aber lieber nichts zu tun haben.

However, many prefer not to have anything to do with it.

Und wieso lässt ein Gott der Liebe überhaupt zu, dass man durch viel Trübsal in das Himmelreich eingehen muss?

And why does a god of love all affect that you have to go into the kingdom of heaven through a lot of tribulation?

Wenn wir ohne jede Trübsal wären, dann bliebe der Charakter unverändert.

If we were without any tribulation, the character would remain unchanged.

Es kommt darauf an, wie wir uns zur Trübsal stellen.

It depends on how we stand for tribulation.

Ich habe einen lieben Freund, der ist wie ein Vater für mich.

I have a dear friend who is like a father for me.

Und der sagt: „Wir dürfen wählen zwischen zwei B.“

"And he says: ""We can choose between two B."""

„Wir können entweder besser werden, oder wir können bitter werden.“

"""We can either get better or we can become bitter."""

Das ist unsere Wahl! Wir können besser werden, oder wir können bitter werden.

This is our choice! We can get better or we can become bitter.

Ich denke, der Herr möchte, dass wir besser werden und nicht bitter.

I think the Lord wants us to get better and not bitter.

Und wenn wir das erst mal gelernt haben, können wir nachher wie Hiob sagen:

And once we have learned that, we can say afterwards as Job:

Auch wenn er mich erschlägt, trotzdem werde ich ihm vertrauen!

Even if he wraps me, I will still trust him!

Wenn wir zu diesem Punkt kommen, dann glaube ich können Wunder passieren.

Ich kann meine Lebensgeschichte nicht ändern.

I can't change my life story.

Leute kamen zu mir, nachdem ich sie erzählt hatte, und sagten: „Das kannst du so nicht erzählen.“

"People came to me after I told her and said: ""You can't tell that."""

„Du wirst die Leute verletzen! Kannst du das nicht ändern?“

"""You will hurt people! Can't you change that?"""

Ja, ich wünschte, ich könnte es ändern, aber so war es eben.

Yes, I wish I could change it, but that's the way it was.

Und ich muss sie so erzählen, wie sie ist.

And I have to tell her as it is.

Es geht mir nicht darum, Menschen, Konfessionen oder Religionen zu verletzen.

I am not concerned with violating people, denominations or religions.

Aber jeder hat doch seinen Pfad, auf dem er geht und wo er so manches entdeckt.

But everyone has their path on which they go and where they discovered many things.

So ist halt das Leben.

Also, ich fange mal vorne an und erzähle, was sich zugetragen hat.

So, I start at the front and tell what happened.

Warum ich schon mit 8 Jahren fast Atheist war und mit 10 Jahren totaler Atheist?

Why was I almost an atheist at the age of 8 and at 10 years of total atheist?

Mehr sogar als ein Atheist! Ich war in der gleichen Kategorie wie Richard Dawkins.

More than an atheist! I was in the same category as Richard Dawkins.

Wenn jemand Gott erwähnte, wurde ich wütend.

If someone mentioned God, I got angry.

Ich erinnere mich an folgende Begebenheit: Als ich noch Atheist und Evolutionist war, habe ich mich vor den Fernseher gestellt …

I remember the following event: When I was still an atheist and evolutionist, I put myself in front of the TV …

… wenn diese religiösen Sendungen kamen, wo gesungen wird in den Gemeinden, mit der Bibel unter dem Arm.

Ich habe mir das angeschaut und alles verhöhnt.

I looked at that and mocked everything.

Laut. Laut verspottet!

Loud. Mocked!

"Sie waren für mich abscheulich, diese Christen mit ihrer „Bibelkrücke"" und ihrem dummen Gottesdienst!"

"They were hideous for me, these Christians with their ""Bible crutch"" and their stupid service!"

So war ich. Alles, was mit Gott zu tun hatte, habe ich gehasst wie die Pest!

So I was. I hated everything that had to do with God like the plague!

Wieso?

How come?

Ich war in meiner Familie christlich erzogen worden.

I was brought up Christian in my family.

Mein Vater war streng katholisch, meine Mutter „still evangelisch“.

"My father was strictly Catholic, my mother ""quietly evangelical""."

Kennt ihr dieses Gefühl?

Do you know this feeling?

Wenigstens gab es nie Streit um den Gottesdienst in unserem Haus.

At least there was never a dispute over the service in our house.

Ich kann mich nicht erinnern, dass es je Streit gab.

I can't remember ever.

Aber, nach katholischer Vorschrift wurde ich katholisch erzogen.

But, according to the Catholic regulation, I was brought up Catholic.

Meine Mutter wurde krank, als ich 8 Jahre alt war. Sie bekam Krebs.

My mother got sick when I was 8 years old. She got cancer.

Damals war die Medizin nicht auf dem heutigen Niveau.

At that time, medicine was not at today's level.

Obwohl das heutige Niveau auch nicht so viel besser ist.

Although today's level is not that much better.

Sie musste sehr, sehr viel leiden. Man hat ihr einen Körperteil nach dem anderen entfernt.

She had to suffer a lot. You have removed one part of her body after the other.

Nachher war sie nur noch bettlägerig. Vier ganze Jahre dauerte es, bis sie endlich starb an dieser schrecklichen Krankheit.

Afterwards she was only bedridden. It took four years to finally die of this terrible illness.

Und ich wuchs auf in diesem Haus, wo man nie wusste, ob die Mutter morgen noch am Leben sein würde.

And I grew up in this house, where you never knew whether the mother would be alive tomorrow.

Im Religionsunterricht hatte ich eine Nonne, die es wahrscheinlich sehr gut meinte.

In religious education I had a nun that probably meant it very well.

Aber es war noch vor 1962, vor dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil, und damals lehrte man:

But it was before 1962, before the second Vatican Council, and at that time they taught:

Wer nicht katholisch ist, kann nicht in den Himmel kommen.

If you are not Catholic, you can't get to heaven.

Und so hat die Schwester gejammert, meine Mutter würde in der Hölle landen.

And so the sister whines that my mother would land in hell.

Im Religionsunterricht sagte sie mir immer wieder, wie tragisch es sei, dass meine Mutter nicht im Himmel sein würde.

In religious education, she kept telling me how tragic it was that my mother would not be in heaven.

Sie fragte, ob ich nicht als Werkzeug dienen könnte, da irgendwas zu bewirken?

She asked if I couldn't serve as a tool to do something?

Ich weiß noch, dass ich in meiner jugendlichen Einfalt einmal Wasser aus Lourdes von der Nonne bekommen habe.

I still know that I got water from Lourdes from the nun in my youthful simplicity.

Ich sollte das auf meine Mutter sprenkeln.

I should sprinkle that on my mother.

Aber meine Mutter wollte davon ja nichts wissen.

But my mother didn't want to know anything about it.

Also musste ich es darstellen, als wäre es aus Versehen passiert.

So I had to show it as if it had accidentally happened.

Und dann sagte sie: „Was machst du da? Jetzt ist alles nass!“

"And then she said: ""What are you doing? Now everything is wet!"""

Natürlich hat es nicht geholfen.

Of course it didn't help.

Aber je mehr ich darüber nachdachte, desto mehr entwickelte ich einen Groll gegen Gott.

But the more I think about it, the more I developed a resentment against God.

Ist doch logisch!

It's logical!

Für einen kleinen Jungen, der 8 oder 9 Jahre alt war und dessen Mutter starb, …

For a little boy who was 8 or 9 years old and whose mother died …

für den war es wichtig, dass seine Mutter in den Himmel kam! Aber es ging ja nicht.

It was important for him that his mother came to heaven! But it didn't work.

Denn da ist dieser Gott, der beschlossen hatte: Du musst zu dieser Kirche gehören, oder es ist aus!

Because there is this God who had decided: you have to belong to this church, or it is over!

Und so wurde ich immer wütender auf Gott. Schließlich habe ich ihn gehasst.

And so I became angrier on God. After all, I hated him.

Eines Tages im Religionsunterricht habe ich den Katechismus genommen, ihn auseinandergerissen und wutentbrannt in Richtung der Schwester geschmissen.

One day in religious education, I took the catechism, torn it apart and burned it in an intimate burning towards the sister.

Das kam nicht sehr gut an.

That was not very well received.

Also wurde ich aus dem Religionsunterricht verbannt und musste draußen im Schulhof sitzen.

So I was banished from religious education and had to sit outside in the schoolyard.

Das war die gute, deutsche Schule Kapstadt, eine hauptsächlich evangelische Schule. Die meisten Schüler waren evangelisch.

That was the good German school Cape Town, a mainly evangelical school. Most students were Protestant.

Immer, wenn ich da im Schulhof saß, kam der Schulleiter vorbei, und wenn man da so auffällig sitzt, dann wird man auch gesehen.

Whenever I was sitting in the school yard, the headmaster passed, and when you sit so strikingly, you will be seen.

Er hat mich dann immer zu sich gerufen und gefragt: „Was machst du hier?“

"Then he always called me and asked: ""What are you doing here?"""

Und dann hab ich gesagt - ich hatte nämlich einen Groll gegen diese arme Nonne …

And then I said - because I had a resentment against this arms …

So nebenbei gesagt: Ich habe auch sehr viele liebe Nonnen gekannt, die sehr liebenswürdig und ganz anders waren, als die bei uns unterrichtete.

By the way: I also knew a lot of love nuns that were very amiable and very different than that taught with us.

Mein Vater wollte früher Priester werden, bis er meine Mutter entdeckte, dann verwarf er diese Idee.

My father used to be a priest until he discovered my mother, then he rejected this idea.

Er war ganz streng katholisch.

He was very strictly Catholic.

Ich erinnere mich, wie wir oft zusammen im Auto saßen mit einer Nonne, die er gut kannte, oder einem deutschen Priester in Kapstadt, …

I remember how we often sat together in the car with a nun he knew well, or a German priest in Cape Town, …

der dasaß und unter Tränen uns sein Herz ausschüttete über seine Entbehrungen und wie schwer es manchmal war in so einer Situation.

Jedenfalls, der Schulleiter hatte nicht viel Geduld mit mir und hat mich jedes Mal versohlt, wenn ich draußen saß.

So bekam ich auch einen Groll gegen den Schulleiter, denn er hat nie nach dem Grund gefragt.

So I also got a resentment against the headmaster, because he never asked about the reason.

Er nahm einfach an, ich sei ein unmöglicher Junge.

He just assumed that I was an impossible boy.

War ich ja auch! Mehr und mehr Lehrer behandelten mich so gemein, vor allem einer.

I was too! More and more teachers treated me so mean, especially one.

Nachts im Bett hatte ich Mordgedanken gegen einige dieser Lehrer.

At night in bed I had thoughts of murder against some of these teachers.

Dieser eine sagte, wenn die Klasse anfing: „Veith, komm her!“

"This one said when the class started: ""Veith, come here!"""

Dann hat er mir links und rechts eine gelatscht und gesagt: „Raus! Mit deiner Sorte will ich nichts zu tun haben.“

"Then he looked to me on the left and right and said: ""Get out! I don't want to have anything to do with your variety."""

Und der war evangelisch.

And that was Protestant.

Und immer, wenn ich draußen im Hof saß, kam dieser Schulleiter. Er war eine Pest, er hat mich immer gefunden!

And whenever I was sitting outside in the yard, this headmaster came. He was a plague, he always found me!

Manchmal kam mir der Gedanke, diese Schule sollte besser gar nicht mehr existieren.

Sometimes the thought came to me that this school should no longer exist.

Daraufhin fing ich an, mich mit Chemie zu beschäftigen.

I then started to deal with chemistry.

Ich war erst acht, neun Jahre alt, aber ich habe alles gelesen!

I was only eight, nine years old, but I read everything!

Ich wäre ein fantastischer Terrorist geworden. Bomben habe ich gebaut und Bäume gesprengt.

I would have become a fantastic terrorist. I built bombs and blown up trees.

Ich wollte die Schule in die Luft jagen. Na ja, meine Noten waren nicht besonders, und als meine Mutter starb, dauerte es nicht lange, …

I wanted to chase school. Well, my grades were not special, and when my mother died, it didn't take long, …

da hatte mein Vater eine andere geheiratet - so eine „Märchen-Stiefmutter“.

Sie wollte nichts mit mir zu tun haben, denn ich war unmöglich.

Das war ich wirklich!

I was really!

Also hat man mich ins Internat gesetzt, und da lebte ich fortan.

So I was put into boarding school, and from then on I lived.

So wuchs ich ohne ein Zuhause auf.

So I grew up without a home.
