Pathogenic Bacteria

Disease producing bacteria; causes infection & diseases while some produce toxins

Bacteria

Sometimes called germs; one celled micro-organisms & either disease-producing/non disease producing

Passive Immunity

Immunity provided when a person is given antibodies to a disease rather than producing them through his/her immune system

Infection

When a disease-causing (pathogens) bacteria/viruses enter the body & multiply; interfering w/ the bodys normal state.

Virus

Sub-microscopic particles caused familiar diseases (common cold, respiratory & gastrointestinal infections, etc.)

Scabies

Itch mites; red & watery vesicles/pus-filled areas caused by animal parasites

Fungi

All types of mold & yeast. Some may produce contagious diseases such as ringworm. (tinea)

pediculosis capitis

Head lice on scalp causing itching & eventually infection

Nonpathogenic Bacteria

Non-disease bacteria; harmless & can be beneficial

Local infection

In small, confined areas. Pus filled boil, pimple/inflamed area

Parasites

Organisms that live on/obtain nutrients from another organism (host)

Active Immunity

Exposure results to disease organism triggers immune system to produce antibodies to the disease

Decontamination

Process of removing pathogens & other substances from tools/surfaces

Indirect Transmission

Spread of an infectionous disease through the air/by contact with a contaminated (dirty) object such as a countertop

Direct Transmission

Spread of infectionous disease that occurs when an infected person exchanges when pathogens through direct contact

Cross Contamination

Unintentional transfer of harmful bacteria, viruses or fungi from one person, objects/surface to another with or without harmful effects

Biofilm

Higly organized bacteria plaque (sticky slime) that is created when a bacteria colony & water are presented
