Compare/Contrast
Writing that examines the similarities and differences between two or more subjects. The writer uses transitions to signal similarities and differences, such as like, likewise, in contrast, similarly, and and in the same way.
Possible Purpose: To explain a decision or provide a new understanding of the subjects addressed within the text’s organizational pattern.
Conflict
In a literary text, the struggle between the opposing forces which move the plot foward. Conflict can be internal, occurring within a character, or external, occuring between characters or between a character and an abstraction, such as nature or fate.
Connotative Meaning of a Word
The emotional response a reader has to a specific term used in the text.
Example: The connotative meaning of childish implies a lack of maturity.
Possible Purpose: To evoke an emotional response from the readers
Denotative Meaning of a Word
A word’s dictionary or literal definition
Example: The meaning of childish is to be child-like
Diction
Word choice. The term must be paired with a type aswell.
Example: Informal, formal, colloquial, humorous, somber, etc.
Possible Purpose: To better connect with the intended audience
