What does lactase do?
Splits lactose into beta glucose and galactose
Why is a person lactose intolerant?
They lack lactase, so lactose is not digested or absorbed -> high levels of soluble lactose remain in small intestine
What happens if there is lots of soluble lactose left in the small intestine?
Supports large population of bacteria, ferments lactose producing gas and can cause abdominal pain
WP becomes more negative, H2O moves into small intestine, not reabsorbed, causes diarrhea
How do adults relate to lactose intolerance?
They rarely produce lactase as the gene is switched off in adulthood
