what is lipolysis
the process by which triglycerides (stored fat) are broken down into free fatty acids and glycerol
what is the first step of lipolysis
hydrolysis of triglycerides: the enzyme hormone-sensitive lipase and other lipases hydrolyze triglycerides into diglycerides and one free fatty acids
what is the second step of lipolysis
hydrolysis of diglycerides: diglycerides are further broken down into monoglycerides and another free fatty acids by the enzyme HSL
what is the third step of lipolysis
hydrolysis of monoglycerides: monoglyceride lipase breaks down monoglycerides into glycerol and one more free fatty acif
what do the free fatty acids from lipolysis do
they can enter the bloodstream, where they are transported to tissues for energy production through beta oxidation
