What do electrons have?
Fixed energies
What are shells or energy levels?
Electrons move around the nucleus in certain regions of the atom
What's each shell given?
A number, the principal quantum number
When a shell is further from the nucleus, what does this mean?
The higher its energy and the larger its principal quantum number
What are shells divided up into?
Sub-shells
What do different electron shells have?
Different numbers of sub-shells, which have a different energy
What are the 4 types of sub-shells?
S sub-shell, p sub-shell, D sub-shell and F sub-shell
What do sub-shells have?
Different numbers of orbitals which can each hold up to 2 elections
How many orbitals can the s sub-shell have and what's the maximum electrons?
1 orbital and 2 electrons
How many orbitals can the P sub-shell have and what's the maximum electrons?
3 orbitals and 6 electrons
How many orbitals can the d sub-shell have and what's the maximum electrons?
5 orbitals and 10 electrons
How many orbitals can the f sub-shell have and what's the maximum electrons?
7 orbitals and 14 electrons
What are the sub-shells in the 1st shell and what are the total number of electrons?
1s and 2 electrons
What are the sub-shells in the 2nd shell and what are the total number of electrons?
2s and 2p and 8 electrons
What are the sub-shells in the 3rd shell and what are the total number of electrons?
3s, 3p and 3d and 18 electrons
What are the sub-shells in the 4th shell and what are the total number of electrons?
4s, 4p, 4d, 4f and 32 electrons
