Muscle tissue
Tissue used for movement, can be controlled voluntarily or involuntarily.
Nervous tissue
Tissue predominantly composed of neurons and neuroglia that supports and protects the nervous system.
Cardiac muscle
A type of muscle tissue that contracts involuntarily, is striated, and is found in the heart.
Skeletal muscle
A type of muscle tissue that contracts voluntarily, is striated, and is connected to bones of the skeleton.
Smooth muscle
A type of muscle tissue that contracts involuntarily, is non-striated, and is found in the walls of various organs.
Neuron
A nerve cell that converts stimuli into nerve impulses and transmits signals throughout the body.
Neuroglia
Supporting cells in nervous tissue that protect neurons and are able to regenerate after injury.
Axon
The part of a neuron that transmits nerve impulses away from the cell body.
Dendrite
The part of a neuron that receives signals from other neurons.
Nerve impulse
An electrical signal that travels along a neuron to communicate with other neurons, muscle fibers, or glands.
