blood pressure
the force of blood pushing against the walls of your arteries as the heart pumps it around the body
systole
the phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle contracts, pumping blood out of the chambers into the aorta and pulmonary artery
diastole
the phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle relaxes and the chambers dilate and fill with blood
systolic pressure
the top (higher) number in a blood pressure reading, measuring the maximum force exerted against artery walls when the heart beats/contracts
diastolic pressure
the pressure of blood against artery walls while the heart is resting between beats, represented by the lower number in a reading
sounds of Korotkoff
tapping, swishing, and thumping noises heard through a stethoscope when measuring blood pressure manually
pulse
the rhythmic expansion and contraction of arteries caused by the heart pumping blood, representing the number of heartbeats per minute
