this type of test gives you an idea of underlying fears, conflicts, and anxieties that a person might have; it’s their own way of perceiving their relationships
projective tests
Advantages of Using Projective Tests
-reveals a lot about a person’s personality expect the image that is shown vs the MMPI, that has a huge degree of structure thus the person is limited on their responding
-PT gives more flexibility in responding; however these structed tests are good bc they’re based on normative data thus comparing an individual to a large group of ppl which compares the results to a large group of findings
-we can’t generalize responses on a projective test bc the responses are only unique to that person
the Rorschach was created by
Hermann Rorschach
a test that consists of 10 bilaterally symmetrical inkblots on separate cards
The Rorschach
what are the different cards on the Rorschach
5 black and white
2 black, white, and red
3 multicolor
the Rorschach administration instructions
-This is the ONLY thing you say→ “What might this be?” ; when you’re done then simply go to the next card
-Record response verbatim: including everything they say, how they hold the card, if they say anything before interpreting, any long pauses, nonverbal gestures or body movements( a sigh or suddenly changing their body movement when you present the card to them)
-No discussion of examinee’s responses
the Rorschach inquiry instructions
-after looking at all the cards you say → “What made it look like _____?” and “Where do you see ____?”
the Inkblot scoring categories
LOCATION: part of the card used to make response → entire thing, large/small section, white space
DETERMINANTS: qualities of inkblot like form, color, shading, movement
POPULARITY: common responses
CONTENT: what’s described in the pics
FORM: how accurate the person’s answers matches the corresponding inkblot
inkblots reliability and validity
Inter-rater reliability with respect to categories is acceptable and with respect to interpretation is low (.41-.71)
Convergent validity of .41
-you can tell with the validity and reliability why it shouldn’t be used alone and why it should be used with other instruments
who created the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
Morgan and Murray
how many card are in the TAT
31
what do the TAT cards consist of
30 black & white with scenes: Describe story.
1 blank: Imagine picture on card and tell related story.
which projective test is for children and which is for adults
CAT is for children and the TAT is for adults
administration of the TAT
•The individuals is asked to “make up a story” to each picture.
-looking for the heroes of the story, the needs the hero has, the conflicts, the presses of the negative that a person might be going through
•Administer a basic set of 10 cards in the same order (if administering all is too time consuming).
•Cards 1, 2, 3BM, 4, 6BM, 7GF, 8BM, 9GF, 10, and 13MF
-wait until all the stories have been told for questioning
TAT pictures as stimuli
•Administering the assigned set of 10 cards in sequential orders provides the advantage of sequential analysis.
•Sequential analysis reveals areas of conflict and difficulty along with ability to deal with these problem areas.

the bellak scoring system
•First: read through the stories, treating them as meaningful psychological communications, and simply underlining anything that seems significant, specific, or unique.
•Second: reread the stories to find a repetitive pattern running through them or to find facets of different stories falling together into a meaningful whole.
•Third: Use the T. A. T. Analysis Blank which is separate recording and analysis sheets
