what is an Ionic Compounds
Compounds formed by the combination of oppositely charged ions.
what is an ionic Lattice
A regular cubic arrangement of ions in an ionic compound.
what happens when the lattice is hit
a layer of ions is shifted so that ions with the same charge are lined up together, the charges repeal each other and make the lattice shatter.
do ionic compounds have a high or low melting point
high
what are the characteristics for solid lattice
cannot conduct electricity, their ions are bonded together so they cannot move.
what are the characteristics for liquid lattice
ions can move and conduct electricity.
what are the characteristics of covelent compounds
Liquids or gases at room temperature /Solids -Soft and malleable /Nonpolar- Insoluble in water, soluble inorganic solvents/Polar-Soluble in water/Low melting and boiling points: attraction between molecule is weak (intermolecular forces)/Are not conductors of electricity/heat
what are metals and alloys
Substances composed of closely packed cations surrounded by a sea of delocalized electrons.
what are the metal properties
Good Conductors of electricity and heat/High luster/Very malleable and ductile/high melting and boiling point/high density
what is ductility?
the quality of being pliable and flexible, like a piece of metal that can be bent into a thin wire.
what does boiling and melting point indicate?
strength of the metallic bond.
why do certain metals conduct larger currents than others?
Some metals contain more free electrons per cubic meter than others.
What is corrosion?
slow breakdown of a metal caused by interactions with various chemicals in its surroundings.
why dosent aluminum corrode?
The aluminum atoms on the outer layer react with oxygen in the air. This results in the creation of a thin layer of aluminum oxide on the surface of the metal. This layer acts as a protective shield, preventing the metal from undergoing corrosion
what is Rusting?
The specific name given to the corrosion of iron, which occurs through a chemical reaction with oxygen and water.
what are Alloys?
Metals composed of more than one element.
An alloy of iron and chromium that is more resistant to rusting than ordinary steel?
stainless steal
What is bronze made of ?
An alloy of copper and tin.
what is Brass made of
An alloy of copper and zinc, typically containing more than 50% copper and known for its corrosion resistance.
what is steel
An alloy of iron and carbon, with the hardness depending on the carbon content.
what is Sterling Silver?
An alloy of silver and copper, typically containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.
what is Nitinol
An alloy of nickel and titanium that can be designed to apply constant force or stress over a variety of shapes.
what are some aplications for nitol?
Medical implants made of metal alloys, such as surgical steel
Why are metals combined
because they are not strong on thier own
