What are the two poles of the magnetic called?
North and South
What do two like poles do?
Repel each other
What do opposite poles do?
Attract each other
What kind of force is repulsion?
Non - contact
What are 3 pure magnetic materials?
Iron, cobalt and nickel
What is an impure magnetic material?
Steel as it is an alloy of iron.
How do you test if a material is magnetic?
Bring it close to another magnet, if it can be repelled then the material itself is a magnet if it can only be attracted then it’s a magnetic material.
What are permanent magnets?
Magnets made out of permanent magnetic material, that produce their own magnetic field.
What is an induced magnet?
When a magnetic material is placed into a magnetic field then it can be induced into a magnet.
What happens when an induced magnet becomes removed from a magnetic field?
It loses all of its magnetism.
What is a magnetic field?
The region around a magnet where a force acts on another magnet or magnetic material.
What is shown by the spacing of magnetic field lines?
The strength of the field.
What way do magnetic field lines travel?
North to South
What are the methods of plotting a magnetic field?
Plotting compass or iron filings.
On Earth, where does the north arrow point?
The geographic North Pole
Where is the geographic South Pole?
Antarctica.
What is the geographic South Pole?
The magnetic north pole.
