He was born in Germany and joined the Augustinian order to become a monk and a priest

Became the Professor of Theology at Wittenberg Univeristy in Saxony

He was worried

That he could not go to heaven and that God would not forgive a sinner like himself

He found his answer in the Bible

Praying to the saints or buying indulgences would not get you into heaven

Luther's Core Belief

Only faith in God would allow a person to go to heaven – justification by faith alone

What sparked off the Reformation

The sale of indulgences

Came to Wittenberg to preach and sell indulgences

He said that

Anyone could buy an indulgence to get into heaven

Half the money

Went to the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome
