Where is it secreted from?
Adrenal glands found just above your kidneys
When is adrenaline secreted?
When theres a low concentration of glucose in your blood, when you’re stressed and when you’re exercising.
What is a second messenger?
When the binding of a hormone to cell receptors activates an enzyme on the inside of the cell membranes, which the produces a chemical known as a second messenger. The second messenger activates other enzymes in the cell to bring about a response. e.g. adrenaline + glucagon
Describe the second messenger action of adrenaline used to increase blood glucose concentration.
Adrenaline binds to receptors on the liver cell membranes.
This activates adenylate cyclase.
This converts ATP into cyclic AMP (cAMP), which is a second messenger.
cAMP activates an enzyme called PKA (protein kinase A).
PKA stimulates the breakdown of glycogen into glucose (glycogenolysis).
