Sold to owners, worked on plantations

75% of exports of raw goods from new colonies = produced from slaves
Cotton -
1850s, 70% of total American cotton crop → Lancashire.
1860, 88% of British cotton textiles = made from Deep South slave cotton.
Abolition of the Slave Trade
Owning slaves in Britain = outlawed 1833, except for India + few territories
British gov = a lot of debt.
Pay compensation to slave owners, loan wasn’t paid off until 2015
Britain gave up on slave trade but still did slavery because profit (short term)
