What is Osmosis
Osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
What water concentration do dilute solutions have
A high concentration of water
What water concentration do concentrated solutions have
Low concentration of water
What’s the job of a partially permeable membrane
Allows for some modules to pass through but not all molecules for example sugar molecules can’t pass through but water can
Describe the concentration of cytoplasms
Cytoplasms tend to have a concentrated solution. So contains low concentration of water
What’s happens if we place a animal cell in water
Osmosis takes place where water moxleules move from outside the cell inside, rhis causes the cell to expand and eventually burst
What happens if we place an animal cell in a concentrated solution
Water will move from in the cell to out by osmosis, causing cell to shrink
What happens if we place a plant cell into water
The water will move into the cell by osmosis and cause it to expand.
However, cell wall prevents the plant cell from bursting, instead it will swollen. This is called turgid
What happens if we place a plant cell in a concentrated solution
Then water moves from in the cell to out by osmosis. This causes the cell to shrink.
Scientists call this flaccid
How to calculate water uptake (g/hour)
Mass change X 60/time measured
