Haversian canal/central canal
Contain blood vessels and nerves; run along the long axis of the bone
Volkman's canal
connect blood and nerve supply between adjacent Haversian systems; run along the short axis of the bone
Lamellae
Concentric (circular) layers around the Haversian canals; sheets of matrix
Haversian System
Also know as an OSTEON, elongated cylinders forming the long axis

The center of the Haversian system; location of blood vessels
Volkman's canal
Also known as a perforating canal
Canaliculi
Small channels connecting the lacuna to blood vessels in the central canal. Contains cytoplasmic extesions of the osteocytes
Osteocyte
A bone cell

location of osteocytes; "pockets" between lamellar layers where cells are located in the matrix of the bone
