Council of Europe
An intergovernmental cooperation organization that was founded in 1949. It focuses on human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
European Union
A political and economic union of member states located primarily in Europe.
Schengen Area
A zone where internal border checks have been abolished, allowing for the free movement of people.
EPC (European Political Cooperation)
An intergovernmental framework for foreign policy coordination among European countries.
TEU (Treaty on European Union) / Maastricht Treaty
Signed in 1992, it established the three-pillar structure of the European Union.
JHA (Justice and Home Affairs)
A policy area of the EU that deals with issues such as asylum, immigration, border control, and police cooperation.
AFSJ (Area of Freedom, Security and Justice)
An area within the EU where people can move freely and where justice and security are ensured.
CFSP (Common Foreign and Security Policy)
A pillar of the EU focused on coordinating foreign and security policies among member states.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
A military alliance established in 1949 to provide collective defense for its member states.
Benelux
A regional economic union comprising Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.
Europol
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, which facilitates cooperation among member states' police forces.
Eurojust
An EU agency that enhances judicial cooperation among member states in criminal matters.
ECtHR (European Court of Human Rights)
A court established by the Council of Europe to rule on alleged violations of the European Convention on Human Rights.
FATF (Financial Action Task Force)
An intergovernmental body that develops policies to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)
An international organization that works to stimulate economic progress and world trade.
UN (United Nations)
An intergovernmental organization established to promote international peace and security, cooperation, and development.
Mutual Recognition
The principle that judicial decisions in one EU country should be recognized and enforced in another
Dublin System
EU law that determines the Member State responsible for examining an asylum application
Intergovernmental Cooperation
When member states choose to work together on a voluntary basis.
EES(Entry/Exit System)
An automated system tracking entry and exit of travelers (both visa-exempt and visa-required) into the Schengen area.
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System)
A system requiring pre-travel security clearance for visa-exempt travelers.
COMIX (Comité Mixte)
A mixed committee of representatives of non-EU Schengen states.
Schengen Borders Code
Regulation governing the border controls to be carried out on persons crossing the external borders of the Member States of the Schengen Area
PNR (Passenger Name Record)
Data collected by air carriers, and shared with EU member states for crime and terrorism
