Plasma Membrane
The outer boundary of a cell that controls the movement of substances in and out.
Extracellular Matrix (ECM)
A network of proteins and carbohydrates outside the cell that provides structural and biochemical support.
Desmosomes
Button-like cell-cell attachments made of linking proteins and anchoring proteins that connect adjacent cells.
Tight Junctions
Membrane proteins that bind together to form a watertight seal between epithelial cells.
Gap Junctions
Direct connections between animal cells that allow for coordinated communication.
Cadherins
Linking proteins in desmosomes that bind to similar cadherins in adjacent cells.
Plasmodesmata
Channels in plant cells that connect the cytoplasm of adjacent cells and allow communication.
Primary Cell Wall
The outer layer of plant cells that defines cell shape and counters turgor pressure.
Extracellular Layer
A protective layer or wall outside the plasma membrane that helps define cell shape and attaches cells.
Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome
A condition caused by a toxin from S. aureus that destroys proteins in desmosomes, causing skin cells to become 'unstuck'.
