Independence
Being free from the control or influence of others
Examples of independence
Dressing based on personal preference
Pursuing a hobby or occupation due to personal preference
Self determination
Engaging in behaviours without the influence of other people as an external force.
The self determination theory
Suggests that individuals behaviour is driven either by Extrinsic or Intrinsic motivation
People achieve self determination when three Basic psychological needs are met:
Autonomy
Competence
Relatedness
Extrinsic motivation
Engaging in activities or behaviours for their external benefits
Example of extrinsic motivation
money, status, not being judged by others
Intrinsic motivation
engaging in activities or behaviours for their internal benefits
Examples of intrinsic motivation
personal growth, knowledge, greater sense of independence
Autonomy
The need to be able to act authentically, based on individual choice and intrinsic motivation.
Examples of autonomy
Having the freedom to act in a way that you want
Having clear, achievable goals that are specific to one’s individual life
Competence
Individuals feel as though they have the skills required to meaningfully carry out behaviours that affect their environment.
Example of competence
Taking the initiative to start a challenging task
Relatedness
The need to feel a sense of attachment, connection to, and belonging with other people
Examples of relatedness
Trusting and feeling affectionate towards your close peers
Feeling like you belong in society
The achievement of independence requires:
Active effort and motivation
social support
Once independence is achieved individuals are:
In a position to control their own lives
Be less influenced by the behaviours of the group.
