Cystic Fibrosis Medications
Medications including TOBI, albuterol, and hypertonic saline; voice alteration is not typically a side effect.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
Aerosolized antibiotics are most consistently used for treating this disease.
Aminoglycosides
These antibiotics are primarily used to treat infections caused by gram-negative bacteria.
Cystic Fibrosis
Aminoglycosides like tobramycin are aerosolized to treat this condition specifically.
Inhibiting cell wall synthesis
Cephalosporins work by performing this action on bacterial cells.
Inhibiting protein synthesis
Macrolides work by carrying out this action.
Small particle aerosol generator (SPAG) unit
The principle of operation for this device is ultrasonic.
Precautionary measures when administering pentamidine
Using a nebulizer with one-way valves and expiratory filter, administering aerosol in a negative-pressure room, avoiding exposure to pregnant women, using barrier protection, and stopping nebulization if the patient removes the mouthpiece.
Bronchiolitis and pneumonia
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) can cause these conditions.
Mycoplasmas and Rickettsiae
Tetracyclines are effective against these.
Penicillin - hypersensitivity
The major adverse reaction caused by this medication family.
Virazole
The trade name for ribavirin.
TMP-SMX
This antibiotic is used to treat Pneumocystis jiroveci infections.
Fluoroquinolones
This group of antibiotics is effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections in CF patients when taken orally.
Specimens commonly selected in pathogen identification
Blood, urine, sputum, pleural fluid and stool are selected as the first step in identification of a pathogen.
Pentamidine
This antibiotic is used for prophylaxis against Pneumocystis jiroveci infections.
Respirgard
This device is used to deliver pentamidine.
SPAG
This device is used to deliver Ribivirin.
Greatest limitation to patient use of a DPI
A patient's ability to provide an inspiratory flow rate of 30-90L/min.
