Nucleus
The regulatory center of the cell that contains genetic material (DNA) and manages cell growth and replication.
Mitochondria
Often called the powerhouse of the cell, these organelles perform cellular respiration to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
Ribosomes
Small structures either floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum that are the primary site of protein synthesis.
Endoplasmic\ Reticulum\ (ER)
A network of folded membranes involved in synthesis: 1. Rough ER - Studded with ribosomes - Involved in protein modification 2. Smooth ER - Lacks ribosomes - Synthesizes lipids and detoxifies chemicals
Golgi\ Apparatus
A series of flattened sacs responsible for modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
Lysosomes
Membrane-bound vesicles containing digestive enzymes used to break down cellular waste, debris, and foreign particles.
Cell\ Membrane
A semi-permeable phospholipid bilayer that provides structural support and regulates the movement of substances entering and exiting the cell.
Cytoplasm
The thick, aqueous substance located between the nucleus and the cell membrane that houses organelles and provides a site for metabolic reactions.
