What are ethics?
Beliefs, conduct, conscience, conventions, decency, values, and principles of integrity that protect human rights.
Relativism
The belief that rules of conduct vary with individual needs, customs, and historical evolution.
Absolutism
The belief that rules of conduct are always the same, irrespective of individual circumstances.
What is an IRB?
Institutional Review Board, a group of experts and laypeople that review research proposals for ethical standards.
Duties of the IRB
To evaluate potential risks, assess safeguards, and recommend modifications as needed.
Code of Ethics
A formalized and written set of principles guiding the conduct of experimentation.
Three basic ethical principles identified by the Belmont Report
Respect for persons 2. Beneficence 3. Justice.
Participants in research
Human subjects included in research plans, chosen based on purpose and methodology.
Informed Consent Forms
Documents used in research that explain procedures, risks, benefits, and obtain participant consent.
Issues in research ethics
Concerns such as privacy, withholding treatment, collecting data, attrition, dishonesty, and conflicts of interest.
Evidence-Based Practice
Research-based approach to determine best practices in fields like audiology and speech-language pathology.
