Awareness
Refers to the 'what' of a client’s experience, focusing on observable thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Insight
Concerns the 'why' of a client’s experience, involving deeper understanding and interpretation of the underlying motivations and beliefs.
Challenge
A skill used to foster awareness by pointing out discrepancies or maladaptive beliefs in a client.
Immediacy
A type of intervention that focuses on the present moment and the therapeutic relationship, distinguishing it from self-disclosure.
Countertransference
The helper’s emotional reaction to the client that can affect their perception and interventions.
Interpretation
An advanced therapeutic skill that links a client's statements to deeper meanings or cause-effect relationships.
Transference
The client's projected feelings and attitudes towards the helper, often linked to past relationships.
Defenses
Cognitive or emotional strategies that protect a person from anxiety and uncomfortable thoughts or feelings.
Non-conscious material
Underlying beliefs and expectations that are not actively recognized by the client but influence their behavior.
Maladaptive beliefs
Thought patterns that are harmful or counterproductive to a client’s well-being.
