IV Complications
Inadvertent leakage of intravenous solution or vesicant into surrounding tissue, causing infiltration or extravasation, respectively.
Infiltration
The inadvertent administration of a non-vesicant solution into the surrounding tissue.
Extravasation
The inadvertent administration of a vesicant medication into the surrounding tissue.
Vesicant
A substance that can cause blistering and tissue damage, commonly used in chemotherapy.
SASH Method
Technique for administering incompatible medications involving Saline, Agent (medication), Saline.
Phlebitis
Inflammation of the wall of a vein, often related to intravenous therapy.
Air Embolism
A condition caused by air entering the vascular system, potentially leading to serious complications.
Dilution of Medications
The process of reducing the concentration of a medication to decrease irritation or inflammation in veins.
Bolus
A large dose of a medication or fluid given over a short period of time to rapidly achieve therapeutic effects.
Therapeutic Range
The concentration of a drug in the bloodstream that produces the desired effect without toxicity.
First Pass Effect
The metabolism of a drug by the liver before it reaches systemic circulation, which can reduce its effectiveness.
Medication Error Statistics
Annually, 1.3 million people in the U.S. suffer injuries from medical treatments, with 98,000 fatalities due to preventable medical errors.
Tissue Damage and Necrosis
Potential consequences of IV infiltration or extravasation, leading to serious patient complications.
CATS PRRRL
A mnemonic for assessing medication compatibility, allergies, type of drug, site, rate, reassess, release clamps, and label.
Hot/Cold Packs
Therapeutic packs applied to IV infiltration sites; heat for non-caustic solutions and cold for caustic solutions.
SAS
Saline, Agent (medication), Saline – a flushing technique used to ensure medication compatibility and patency.
Volume Control Set
An infusion set used to strictly control fluid administration, especially in sensitive patients.
Patient Safety
Ensuring the well-being of patients during the administration of intravenous medications to prevent errors.
Critical Thinking
Essential skill in nursing to evaluate medication orders, compatibility, and patient status during IV administration.
