Consciousness
The state of being aware of and able to think and perceive one's environment.
Declarative Memory
A type of memory that can be consciously recalled, includes facts and events.
Procedural Memory
A type of nonconscious memory for the performance of tasks which have become automatic.
Working Memory
A temporary storage system that holds goal-relevant information for a short time.
Selective Attention
The ability to focus on one specific thing while ignoring distractions.
Divided Attention
The ability to focus on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Sustained Attention
The ability to maintain focus on one task over an extended period of time.
Arousal Level
The general level of awareness and responsiveness to stimuli.
Neurotransmitters
Chemical substances that transmit signals across synapses in the brain.
Memory Consolidation
The process of stabilizing a memory trace after its initial acquisition.
Episodic Memory
A type of declarative memory that involves the recollection of personal experiences.
Semantic Memory
A type of declarative memory that includes facts and general knowledge not tied to personal experience.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
A mental disorder characterized by problems with focus, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
Alzheimer’s Disease
A progressive neurological disease that leads to memory loss and cognitive decline.
Trisomy 21
Also known as Down syndrome, a genetic condition resulting from an extra chromosome 21.
