How does the reducing sugar test work
The sugar causes the copper ions in the benedicts to be reduced and form a brick red precipitate
How does the non-reducing sugar test work
It doesn't reduce the copper ions and therefore the benedicts stay blue
What causes different colours from a benedicts test
A higher amount of reduced copper ions
What is the range of colours in a benedicts test
Green, yellow, orange, red
How does a non-reducing sugar test work
The dilute HCl splits up the disaccharide in a hydrolysis so that it becomes two monosaccharides. These then behave normally in benedicts
What types of sugars are monosaccherides
they are all reducing sugars
Which disaccharides are reducing
maltose and lactose
Which disaccharides are non-reducing
sucrose
