Acknowledgment
A formal declaration by a person before a duly authorized officer that an executed instrument is their act and deed.
Affiant
The person who makes and subscribes his signature to an affidavit.
Affidavit
A signed statement, duly sworn to, by the maker before a notary public or other officer authorized to administer oaths.
Affirmation
A solemn declaration made by persons who conscientiously decline taking an oath, equivalent to an oath.
Attest
To witness the execution of a written instrument and subscribe as a witness.
Deposition
The testimony of a witness taken out of court under oath before a notary public or authorized person.
Duress
Unlawful constraint exercised upon a person to force them to act against their will.
Executor
A person named in a will to carry out its provisions.
Fraudulent certificate of acknowledgment
A false statement by a notary that a deed was acknowledged, which is punishable by law.
Jurat
The part of an affidavit where the officer certifies that it was sworn to before them.
Power of Attorney
A written statement granting another person the authority to act on one's behalf.
Venue
The geographical place where a notary public takes an affidavit or acknowledgment.
Will
The disposition of one's property intended to take effect after death.
