Hardness/Stiffness
ability to resist mechanical indentation (wear and tear)
Example: diamond — hardest known natural material
used in cutting tools since it’s so hard
Strength
maximum stress able to withstand before deforming
Example: steel — high tensile strength
holds up large structures like bridges and skyscrapers without bending or breaking
Toughness
ability to absorb energy and resist sudden impact before failure
Example: rubber — stretch, deform, and absorb energy without breaking quickly
used as shock absorbers and in tires
Brittle
tendency to fracture with little deformation under force
Example: glass — cracks cleanly under sudden force
