7 Terms

1
New cards

3) Describe species evenness

Measure of how individual organisms are balanced between different species

2
New cards

4) What can high species richness tell you about an ecosystem?

-indicates a high level of biodiversity and the ecosystem is healthy and stable

-resilience against environmental changes and disturbances.

-variety of habitats and resources

3
New cards

6) What allows genetic diversity to be possible? Or what drives genetic diversity?

-reproduction

-combination of different genes from the parent cells to to offspring leading to new traits

4
New cards

7) Explain what can cause a bottleneck effect. What is the result?

-Storm, flood, any disturbances

-resulting in species becoming endangered due to the disturbances killing off their population becoming smaller and less genetically diverse lead them to be more vulnerable to disturbances

5
New cards

8) Explain ecosystem resilience. Why would one ecosystem be more resilient than the other?

Ecosystem resilience: ability of an ecosystem to return to their original conditions after a disturbance

Why: Ecosystems with high biodiversity tend to be more resilient because they have a greater variety of species that have more niches and roles in the environment

New cards

9) what are the 4 categories of ecosystem services we discussed given example for each. (only cultural)

Cultural example: landscapes draw tourists who pay to enter parks which spend money for restaurants, stores, fees

7
New cards

10) what would be the ecological economic impact of deforestation?

Ecological: leads to habitat loss resulting in a decrease in biodiversity

Economic: reduces ecosystem services like impacting agriculture, tourism’s, and fishing
