define respiration
chemical reaction that breaks down glucose to release ATP (adenine triphosphate)
why is respiration need
muscles to contract
active transport
protein synthesis
cell division
what are the two types of respiration
aerobic respiration
anaerobic respiration
what is the word equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration (in animals)
glucose —> lactic acid
what is the difference between anaerobic respiration and aerobic respiration
in anaerobic respiration
oxygen is not required
low ATP
product is lactic acid
in aerobic respiration
oxygen is required
high ATP
product is carbon dioxide and water.
what is the word equation for anaerobic respiration (plants)
glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide.
what is the chemical balanced equation for aerobic respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 —> 6CO2 + 6H2O
how would you investgiate to see if carbon dioxide and heat is released from respiration
get tube
fill a quarter of the tube with hydrogen carbonate indicator
get cotton and put it in the flask (dont make the hydrogen carbonate indicator touch the cotton wool)
place the germinating seeds ontop of the cotton wool and use a lid on the top of the testing tube
red —> yellow of the colour of the indicator will be the result if respiration took place.
