Sigmund Freud
Austrian physician known as the Father of Psychoanalysis, which explains that human behavior is largely influenced by the subconscious mind and childhood experiences.
Psychoanalysis
A theory that explains that human behavior is largely influenced by the subconscious mind and childhood experiences.
Id
The most basic part of the personality that exists from birth, works entirely in the unconscious realm and contains basic biological drives and instincts.
Ego
Develops after the Id, and serves as a regulator between the Id's impulses and reality in the outside world.
Superego
The part of the personality that represents moral values, social rules, and conscience.
Libido
Psychic energy that encourages individuals to seek satisfaction, maintain life, and develop.
Thanatos
Drive towards destruction, violence, or destructive behavior.
Repression
Expelling painful thoughts or feelings into the unconscious realm.
Projection
Blaming others for one's own feelings or desires.
Rationalization
Finding logical reasons to cover up failures or mistakes.
Displacement
Expressing emotions to other people or objects that are safer.
Fixation
Stuck in one stage of development because there are unmet needs.
Regression
Returning to childish behavior when experiencing stress or pressure.
Introjection
Adopting other people's attitudes, values, or ways of thinking and making them part of oneself, unconsciously.
Sublimation
Channeling negative or socially unacceptable impulses into positive and accepted activities.
Oedipus Complex
A boy's sexual desire for his mother and feelings of jealousy and hatred for the rival father.
Electra Complex
A girl's psychosexual competition with her mother for possession of her father.
