Ivan pavlov
a scientist who completed the conditioning experiment with a metronome, dog and dog food.
Contingent relationship
the presentation of a stimulus that reliably leads to the presentation of another
Classical conditioning
the learning of a contingency between a particular stimulus that leads to an event that are paired in time/space
Unconditioned stimulus
a stimulus that occurs naturally, prior to learning
Unconditioned response
the response that occurs after an unconditioned stimulus, which occurs naturally
Conditioned stimulus
a previously neutral stimulus that becomes associated with an unconditional stimulus to eventually trigger a response on its own
Conditioned response
A response that occurs once the contingency between conditional stimulus and the unconditional stimulus has been learned
Spontaneous recovery
the sudden recovering of a conditional response following a rest after extinction
Extinction
the diminishing of a conditioned response
Stimulus generalization
the process in which a similar stimuli of the conditional stimulus will trigger an elicit conditioned response
Stimulus discrimination
Restricting the range of the conditional stimulus that triggers an elicit conditional response
CS+
Predicts the presence of a conditioned stimulus
CS-
predicts the absence of a conditioned response
Implosive therapy
the sudden exposure to the thing that invokes a conditioned stimulus in order to confront it
Systematic desensitization
The gradual process of confronting some thing that invokes a conditional stimulus by using things that fall under the stimulus generalization
Compensatory response
A response which counteracts a challenge facing homeostasis
Four things to know about classical conditioning
1. Classical conditioning generates multiple responses.
2. Classical conditioning establishes preferences and adversions
3. Classical conditioning underlies various psychological conditions
4. Pairing the unconditional stimulus and conditional stimulus is not sufficient for conditioning to occur
