Crusades
Military campaigns in the medieval period, notably sanctioned by the Pope, aimed at reclaiming the Holy Land from Muslim control.
First Crusade
A military expedition from 1096 to 1099 that resulted in the capture of Jerusalem by Christian forces.
Papal Indulgence
A promise from the Pope granting full pardon for sin to participants in the Crusades, allowing them to bypass purgatory.
Great Schism
The split between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church that occurred in 1054.
Holy War
A war called for religious reasons, as seen in the Crusades, often justified by the Church.
Knights Templar
A medieval order of warrior monks established to protect Christian pilgrims and territory during the Crusades.
Byzantine Empire
The continuation of the Roman Empire in the east, which sought aid from the Pope during the Crusades.
Seljuk Turks
A Muslim dynasty that took territory from the Byzantine Empire, prompting the call for the First Crusade.
Siege of Antioch
A protracted military blockade during the First Crusade where Crusaders waited to capture the city from the Turks.
Pilgrimage
A journey to a sacred place as an act of religious devotion, which was part of the motivation for the Crusades.
Peter Bartholomew
A figure during the First Crusade who claimed to have a vision of a holy lance, which motivated the Crusaders to victory.
Jerusalem
A city of utmost significance in Christianity, captured by the Crusaders in 1099 and considered a key objective of the Crusades.
