Imperialism

Process through which status in the colonies became closely linked to financial success and refined lifestyles instead of family pedigree.
Middle Passage
The second leg of the Africans' forced journey from Africa to the Americas. This part of the journey was brutal, and many died before reaching the Americas.

A series of laws which defined slavery as a status based on racial identity, and that status was passed through generations.
Gang labor
A system in which slaves worked under harsh conditions on plantations.
Stono Rebellion
An uprising in 1739 South Carolina by enslaved Africans and African Americans. In the aftermath of this rebellion, white fear of slave revolts increased.
Anglo-Powhatan Wars
A series of conflicts in the 1620s between the Powhatan Confederacy and English settlers in Maryland and Virginia.
Covenant Chain
An alliance between Iroquois leaders and colonists in 1677 Albany.
Tuscarora War
A war started by the Tuscarora Indians against the European settlers in North Carolina, along with their allies (the Yamasee, Catawba, and Cherokee nations) from 1711 to 1715.
Yamasee War
A pan-American Indian war that lasted from 1715 to 1717. The Yamasee led this war with the intention of driving the British from South Carolina. (the plan failed)
Queen Anne’s War
A war lasting from 1702-1713 that was over control of Spain and the Spanish colonies. (War of the Spanish Succession)
Treaty of Utrecht
Peace treaties signed by belligerents in the War of the Spanish Succession in the city of Utrecht in 1713.
King George’s War
A war turned conflict over French and English competing interests from 1689-1697. This conflict began in Europe, but spread to the American frontier.
Enlightenment
A European cultural movement that happened in the seventeenth century, centering around scientific and rational thinking instead of traditional religion and superstition.
Original Sin
A religious concept that you are born with original sin because of Adam and Eve, and the Sacrament of Baptism washes the sin away.
New Light Clergy
A colonial clergy that called for religious revivals and helped to emphasize emotional aspects of spiritual commitment.
Old Light Clergy
A colonial clergy that came from established churches.
Pietist
Germans that created ideas to help influence the New Light Clergy.
Methodism
A religion founded by John Wesley.
Great Awakening
A series of religious revivals in 1720 colonial America. These lasted until 1750.
Impressment
Forced enlistment of civilians into the Navy or Army.
Seditious
Behavior or language that was aimed at rebelling against a government.
Libel
A falsely written document that was made to harm the subject's reputation.
