at first required them to be able to read and write to vote, however it was found that more Maori could do this than the british so it was changed
instead dependent on whether you were a house owner (individual and granted by the Crown, not communally owned)
what happened in 1867?
Maori Representation Act 1867 introduced giving Maori 4 seats in parliament
1876 became permanent
what was the importance of getting these seats?
gave political voice, ensure representation, safeguard interests
