Why do people live in the southern part of Canada?

People tend to live in the south because of the warm climate and proximity to the United States.

Three important factors affecting rural settlement patterns

1. Nature of the resources, 2. Transportation methods, 3. The role of government.

Continental Drift

Alfred Wegener's theory that all land masses were once connected as one continent called Pangaea.

Pangaea

The single continent formed 300 million years ago, meaning 'all land'.

Evidence for Continental Drift

The jigsaw fit of the continents was the initial evidence that suggested they were once connected.

Igneous Rocks

Rocks that were superheated and originally liquid, formed from lava or magma.

Extrusive Igneous Rocks

Rocks formed from lava on the earth’s surface.

Intrusive Igneous Rocks

Rocks formed from magma below the earth’s surface.

Sedimentary Rocks

Rocks created from compressed sediments that build up over time.

Metamorphic Rocks

Rocks created from igneous or sedimentary rock through heat and/or pressure.

Volcano

A place on the earth's surface where molten rock, gases and explosive debris erupt.

Magma

Molten or melted rock from inside the earth's crust.

Lava

Flowing magma on the earth's surface.

Earthquake

Rapid shaking of the earth caused by a sudden movement of large rock sections.

Pacific Ring of Fire

An area encircling the Pacific Ocean with high volcanic and seismic activity.

Tsunami

A large wave or series of waves caused by undersea earthquakes displacing water.
