what is Maslow's hierarchy of needs?
a theory of motivation which states that five categories of human needs dictate an individual's behaviour.
physiological needs
the basic level - those required to sustain life such as: water, air, food and sleep
safety needs
safety and security in order to be free from the threat of physical and emotional harm
social needs
needs related to interactions with others maybe include - friendship, belonging to a group, giving and receiving love, intimate relationship
esteem needs
externals or internal motivations. internal - self esteem, accomplishment, and self respect, external - reputation and recognition
self actualisation
