Joint
An articulation or arthrosis where bones come together, allowing for movement.
Articulation
The place where two bones meet to form a joint.
Dense connective tissue
Tissue that holds bones together at joints, providing stability.
Cartilage
A flexible connective tissue providing cushioning at joints.
Connective tissue
A type of tissue that provides support, binds together, and protects organs.
Connective tissue proper
A subtype of connective tissue that includes tendons and ligaments.
Collagen
The most important protein in connective tissue, providing strength.
Ground substance
The gel-like material in connective tissue that affects its viscosity.
Tendons
Connective tissues that attach muscles to bones.
Ligaments
Connective tissues that connect bones to other bones at a joint.
Sprain
An injury to a ligament caused by stretching or tearing.
Fibrous joint
A structural type of joint connected by dense connective tissue.
Cartilaginous joint
A structural type of joint where bones are connected by cartilage.
Synovial joint
A joint with a joint cavity filled with synovial fluid, allowing for movement.
Diarthrotic joint
A type of joint that allows free movement.
Amphiarthrotic joint
A joint that allows limited movement.
Synarthrotic joint
A joint that is immobile.
Pivot joint
A synovial joint allowing rotation around an axis.
Hinge joint
A synovial joint allowing movement in one plane.
Ball-and-socket joint
A synovial joint that allows movement in three planes.
Condyloid joint
A synovial joint allowing movement in two planes.
Saddle joint
A synovial joint allowing movement in two planes but with unique shapes.
Plane joint
A synovial joint that allows gliding movements between bones.
Glenohumeral joint
The shoulder joint, a ball-and-socket joint with high mobility and low stability.
Rotator cuff
A group of muscles that stabilize the shoulder joint.
Capsule
The connective tissue surrounding a synovial joint.
Meniscus
Cartilage pads in some joints that provide cushioning and stability.
ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament)
A knee ligament important for stabilizing movement.
PCL (Posterior Cruciate Ligament)
A knee ligament that prevents backward movement of the tibia.
MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament)
A knee ligament that supports the inner joint space.
LCL (Lateral Collateral Ligament)
A knee ligament that supports the outer joint space.
Ankle sprain
An injury caused by stretching or tearing the ligaments of the ankle.
