The Environmental Crisis
A severe drought in 1930 ruined crops for 17 million Americans in the eastern USA.
In 1932, high winds created dust storms across the Great Plains. In April 1933, 179 small dust storms were recorded, 38 of which were severe "black blizzards."
The storms blew away fertile topsoil, making farming impossible and causing widespread farm failure.
Between 1930 and 1935, around 1 million people migrated from the Great Plains to states like California. These migrants were nicknamed "Okies."
