As you tour the cat holding portion of T & C, how is this unique compared to many cat boarding areas?
No air exchange from the dogs- fresh air flows in and out constantly, Bird feeders and fish pond outside, TV. Free roaming, emergency cat bags.
2
New cards
Similarly, what is unique about the drying area (where they go after their bath) for the animals? Why is this important
Drying room is most dangerous room. Heating elements are disconnected from dryers to decrease the heat and humidity in the room and the chance of death of pets. Room also has extra air conditioning.
3
New cards
How many dogs (approximately) can this facility board at one time? How much time and work do you think boarding this many animals may take? (How many employees are needed when they are full to handle this amount of work)
300 dogs at most. 279 largest number they've had.
4
New cards
It takes 2 hr every morning and services are from 10-3. 25 employees during summer, 15 during slow season.

T & C has a large training area. What is this area used for & what is the purpose of the mirrors?
They offer obedience, agility and many other training services. The mirrors allow the handler to see the position of the dog when training show dogs.
8
New cards
Every boarded dog has a chance to go outside each day (weather permits). This is another unique service. How is this accomplished (make sure that your answer includes how this is accomplished with aggressive animals)?
Avoid touching aggressive dogs if possible. Runs for aggressive dogs have door and front and back, allowing the dog to go outside through the back door to minimize contact.
9
New cards
Explain how many layers of fencing are at this facility (after every door) and explain why the number matters - (This links to accreditation - thus - what is accreditation)
Triple fenced. It is necessary for accreditation. Accreditation shows that you are following a list of guidelines and maintaining at least the minimum level in these guidelines, it also gives the owner the ability to rank care.
10
New cards
The co-owner of T & C partnered up with her friend a veterinarian and therefore this facility is used for boarding, grooming, training, day care and vet care. Explain why this is a good idea.

This facility can house & service numerous animals and it is still extremely clean. Why is this cleanliness so important for both companion animal management & running a business?
Cleanliness reduces the transfer for disease and maintains the health of the animals, but it also looks nice for customers when they bring or pick up their pet. People don't want to spend a lot of money to leave their pet at a dirty place

Adopting a pet from the SPCA (or any adoption facility) is not a given for everyone. They try to make sure each potential owner is appropriate. Does this hurts the chances of adoption for pets or do you think that it saves pet lives (explain).
Personal opinion, Molly said: Yes, you can hurt the chances by being picky - must reduce criteria for adoptive parents so the animals can be adopted.
18
New cards
How does the SPCA (and how can we) prevent spreading disease between the animals that visitors are allowed to touch. (List 2 ways for full credit).
Hand sanitizer, no air recirculation, separate rooms for different aged animals (like puppies)
19
New cards
Are there liability / danger concerns with allowing the public access to animals (especially those traditionally considered more aggressive)? Explain a little.
Not really. Liability insurance is mandatory due to possible bites. When you come to the SPCA you assume understood risk. No breed discrimination.

Expansion of facilities/SPCA stopped taking government contracts. In 2010 WCAS became the only county facility that must intake homeless pets & in 2011 the vet school left the Wake Co animal shelter causing new management and hire procedures. Now when a pet is lost, it normally goes to WCAS.

WCAS is government run/regulated, government and tax payer funded. The SPCA is non-profit, they get most of their money from donations.
