World War One
A global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918, involving many world powers.
Causes of World War One
Militarism, Alliances, Nationalism, Imperialism, and the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
Militarism
The belief that a country should maintain a strong military and be prepared to defend or promote national interests.
Alliances
Agreements between countries to support each other in case of conflict, such as the Triple Alliance and Triple Entente during World War One.
Nationalism
Strong patriotic feeling, often marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries.
Imperialism
The policy of extending a country's power and influence through colonization, military force, or other means.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
His assassination in 1914 triggered the start of World War One.
Zimmerman Telegram
A secret diplomatic communication sent by the German Empire to Mexico proposing a military alliance against the United States.
U-Boat
A German submarine used extensively during World War One.
Trench Warfare
A type of combat in which soldiers dug trenches to fight in, leading to a static front line.
No Man's Land
The area between opposing trenches, known for its danger and high levels of casualties.
The Red Baron
A famous German fighter pilot known for scoring 80 air combat victories during World War One.
Lusitania
A British ocean liner sunk by a German U-boat; its sinking helped turn public opinion in the U.S. against Germany.

The date when World War One ended with an armistice.
League of Nations
An international organization formed after World War One aimed at promoting peace and cooperation among countries.
Treaty of Versailles
The peace treaty that ended World War One, imposing heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany.
