This method relies heavily on ancestry records which at times are reliable, and in most cases, not available.

Pedigree evaluation

This is the most common and practical method. Based on this method, animal are evaluated for traits that can be measured directly on them such as ADG and BF.

Tandem method

is the most efficient way to improve herd genetics but is complex due to multiple traits, heritability, correlations, and economic values.

Selection index

• Healthy, vigorous, and active

• Promise of good gainers and rapid growers

• Rapid growers usually comes from highest weight at weaning

• Free from hereditary defects and diseases

• Never purchase/buy runts
