full alphabetic stage
student sounds out phonemes in words. plan is p-l-a-n. use books with recognizable patterns
consolidated alphabetic stage
reads based on memorization of syllables, affixes and letter chunks. use books containing longer multi syllable words
automatic stage
can fluently read. decodes only when met with unfamiliar words
