pre-alphabetic stage
no working knowledge of the alphabet. based on memorization of symbols (sees target and “reads” target)
explicitly teach letter sound correspondence, use nursery rhymes
partial alphabetic stage
limited alphabetic knowledge, work with context clues to “read”.
use repetitive, predictable texts.
full alphabetic stage
student sounds out phonemes in words. plan is p-l-a-n. use books with recognizable patterns
consolidated alphabetic stage
reads based on memorization of syllables, affixes and letter chunks. use books containing longer multi syllable words
automatic stage
can fluently read. decodes only when met with unfamiliar words
