Synaptic plasticity

the ability of synapses to change over time in response to experience or activities, resulting in weakening or strengthening synaptic connections.

Long-term potentiation (LTP)

The permanent strengthening of synaptic connections as a result of repeated activation of a neural pathway

Long-term depression (LTD)

The permanent weakening of synaptic connections as a result of repeated low-level activation of a neural pathway

Neural processes - Sprouting

The growth of axons or dendrites due to experiences and new connections between neurons.

Neural processes- Rerouting

Re-establishing neural connections through creating new alternative neural pathways.

Neural processes- Pruning

The elimination of excess neurons and synaptic connections that are not activated, resulting in increasing efficiency of neural transmissions.
